copyright & dmca

effective august 23, 2026
The plain-English version: if something on SOMO infringes your copyright, tell us and it comes down fast. If something of yours was taken down by mistake, you can contest it and get it back. This page is the formal machinery for both.

our policy

SOMO respects copyright and expects the people who live here to do the same. We respond to proper infringement notices under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. §512): we remove or disable access to the identified material expeditiously, we notify the person who posted it, and we terminate the accounts of repeat infringers as described in our terms of service.

designated copyright agent

Send copyright notices to our designated agent. Email is the fastest path.

filing a takedown notice

For your notice to be effective under §512(c)(3), it must include:

When we receive a proper notice we will remove or disable access to the material expeditiously, notify the person who posted it, and record the strike against their account.

counter-notice

If your material was removed and you believe that was a mistake or a misidentification, you may send our agent a counter-notice under §512(g)(3). It must include:

We will forward your counter-notice to the original complainant. Unless they notify us that they have filed a court action seeking to restrain the infringement, the removed material may be restored in ten to fourteen business days.

repeat infringers

Accounts that repeatedly infringe copyright are terminated in appropriate circumstances. Strikes are recorded; this policy is enforced.

false claims

Under §512(f), anyone who knowingly and materially misrepresents that material is infringing — or that it was removed by mistake — is liable for the resulting damages, including costs and attorneys’ fees. Don’t weaponize this process.
